Overcoming financial barriers – creating opportunities

Ambitious students facing financial difficulties are given the opportunity to receive an excellent education at HSG – and thus the best chances to realise their professional goals and dreams.

The rising cost of living in Switzerland and the challenge of having to finance one’s own studies present a serious obstacle for many students. This often leads to delays in completing their studies or even to them dropping out. The HSG Social Scholarship helps to ensure that education is accessible to all ambitious and determined students – regardless of their financial circumstances.

Students may receive funding if

their financial circumstances justify support,
their applications for funding from public or private sources have been rejected or are insufficient,
they demonstrate that they are motivated, committed and willing to work hard,
they are in their assessment year, Bachelor’s or Master’s programme and have successfully completed at least one semester at HSG.

The scholarship is awarded by HSG’s Office for Study Funding, which carefully reviews each application and also advises students in all funding matters.

Challenges facing students and HSG

The cost of living in Switzerland rises conintuesly. And more students are finding it hard to finance their studies. Since 2019, the number of students applying for financial support at HSG has risen by 40 per cent. Providing a scholarship to all students who are eligible for financial support from the regular budget is therefore becoming more and more difficlult. That is why we need your support.

The cost of living for students is rising steadily and stands at CHF 13,000 per semester in Switzerland.

The number of students applying for financial support has risen by 40 per cent since 2019.

Higher drop-out rate

Students who have to support themselves financially and who come from non-academic families are more likely to have to delay or drop out of their studies.

How it works – Support for ambitious students

Thanks to the HSG social scholarship, numerous students have already been able to successfully complete their studies – and forge their own path.

Scholarship holders receive funding to cover their tuition fees, as well as a fixed allowance of currently CHF 1,700 per semester for study-relatd expenses, such as learning materials; this funding is awarded from the second semester onwards by the HSG Center for Study Funding

Example 1

Luca , 19, from the canton of Zurich, lives with his brother and his single mother. He is the first in his family to aim for a university degree. He passed the first semester of his foundation year with good marks and was able to finance it thanks to his grandparents. However, they are not able to pay for his entire degree. He would like to study Law and Economics – the scholarship gives him financial security.

Total study costs per semester (including living costs, source: Swiss Federal Statistica Office): CHF 14,311
Scholarship support per semester: CHF 3,011 (CHF 1,311 tuition fees + CHF 1,700 study expenses)

Example 2

Maria , 23, came to Switzerland without her family due to the war in Ukraine and is living with a host family, but cannot receive financial support from her family. She has a bachelor’s degree and would like to study International Affairs at master’s level at the HSG.

Total study costs per semester (including living costs, source: Swiss Federal Statistica Office): CHF 16,558
Scholarship support per semester: CHF 5,258 (CHF 3,558 tuition fees + CHF 1,700 study expenses)
